There are lots of reasons to Invest in Lancashire
A powerhouse in the energy field, Lancashire has significant strengths in nuclear, shale gas and wind power. Major investments in the industry have led to great strides in attracting prestigious engineering businesses that serve the nuclear, oil and gas, water, transmission and distribution sectors.
We employ over 10,900 employees in this area with civil engineering talent representing a proportion of employment 24 times higher than the national average.
Positioned at the heart of the North West’s nuclear industry, we have expert knowledge in power generation, nuclear new build, plant life extension and decommissioning, as well as in fuel fabrication and uranium conversion.
We’re the only UK region to have a whole fuel cycle capability and the UK’s Office for Nuclear Regulation is also headquartered in the region, along with the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority.
The Nuclear Industry Association estimates that 3,600 people are employed by the nuclear industry locally. Blackpool Airport, located within the Enterprise Zone, also services the energy sector and operates flights to nearby gas rigs and wind farms.
The Lancashire Bowland Shale gas exploration licence represents eight sites, one already operational, which has led to the development of the Lancashire Shale Gas Supply Chain portal, to enable companies to easily access local commercial opportunities.
We’re also proud to have Lancashire Energy HQ in Blackpool, a £10.7 million facility with a sole aim of preparing and equipping a skilled workforce in the renewable and oil and gas energy sectors.
